Your new
internship and workplace.
As an Intern
within the Store Technology Platform (STP) team, you will
contribute directly to improving visibility and management of store
hardware across Albert Heijn stores. You will work together with
colleagues from the Store Technology Platform and architecture
teams on an innovative proof-of-concept focused on IoT and hardware
asset management.
Retail stores operate a
diverse landscape of store-level hardware devices that are
essential for business continuity, customer experience, and
compliance. These include operational controllers, peripheral
devices, and embedded systems that often fall outside standard
endpoint management solutions. As a result, discovery, inventory,
and lifecycle visibility of this hardware is often fragmented or
manual.
During this internship, you will
explore how store hardware can be automatically discovered using a
local gateway running on the store server and integrated with the
AH IoT platform. You will support the design and implementation of
a proof-of-concept that demonstrates how connected devices can be
identified, normalized, and registered as structured assets for
hardware asset management and operational
monitoring.
You will work
on:
- Exploring how store hardware can
be automatically discovered via a local
gateway. - Designing a generic data model for
representing discovered devices and
telemetry. - Building a proof-of-concept that
publishes device information to the AH IoT
platform. - Investigating discovery techniques
such as network inspection, protocol interrogation, and device
self-identification. - Documenting findings,
architectural considerations, scalability limitations, and
recommendations.
This
internship gives you hands-on experience with IoT, distributed
systems, and retail technology in a real world enterprise
environment. You will collaborate with architecture and engineering
teams while working on an architecture-driven proof-of-concept with
room for your own ideas and technical
input.
In this role, you work 32-40 hours per
week, partly from our head office in
Zaandam and partly from home.
We
find it important that you can be yourself at Albert Heijn in an
environment that welcomes different perspectives, where we are
curious and value each other. For this role, we especially welcome
candidates who strengthen the diversity within our team in the
broadest sense of the word. Someone who brings a different
perspective through their background and personal qualities and
complements our team.
What we
offer you.
- An
interesting and versatile internship at the Albert Heijn head
office for 5/6 months, starting in September
2026. - A challenging internship with real
responsibilities and hands-on experience. - An
internship allowance (€500 per four weeks) plus travel
allowance. - Social events and networking
opportunities with fellow interns at our head
office. - An inclusive environment where you can
continuously develop yourself both personally and
professionally.
What you bring.
With our 125,000 colleagues,
we fill more than seven million plates every evening. And if it is
up to us,
we will soon do that together with you as our new
Intern. Especially if you bring analytical skills and curiosity to Albert
Heijn.
Also:
- You
are currently pursuing an HBO or WO degree, preferably in
Informatics, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related
field. - You have an affinity with IoT, hardware,
and distributed systems. - You have basic
knowledge of networking and programming or
scripting. - Experience with IoT platforms,
networking protocols, or edge computing is a strong
plus. - If you combine a passion for technology
with strong communication skills, even
better!
Additionally, you are:
- Someone
who enjoys exploring technical challenges
independently. - A proactive problem-solver who
takes initiative and clearly documents
findings. - Structured enough to work within
architectural guidelines and maintain overview in complex
environments.
Together we
make better food accessible. For everyone.
Every evening, Albert Heijn’s 125,000
colleagues — spread across more than 1,250 stores in the
Netherlands and Belgium, nine home shopcenters, seven distribution
centers, and our headquarters — help fill over seven million
plates. At Albert Heijn, we believe that food and drinks play
an essential role in addressing society’s biggest challenges. They
contribute to a healthy lifestyle, bring people together, and
support a better climate and a more sustainable
society.
Albert Heijn Netherlands is B Corp
